A really lovely little jumper

Knitted polo shirt (Debbie Bliss: Baby Cashmerino Bk 3)

Few weeks go by without some small technical trauma and this week I dropped my camera (in its sturdy protective case) and think I may have done for it. No time to investigate further (yet) so my husband let me use his. Phew.

This is a delightful little jumper to knit and the end product is just as it appears in the book. Just one small crisis as I encountered the forbidding words “rib to last 20 sts, turn”, but I did as requested and all was fine. In fact I’m really impressed how those few turning rows shape the collar and now I’m mad about collars and I want to put them on all future jumpers … but I won’t because then I should have to stop and work out how to do that for myself.

This jumper is for a 3-6 month baby. The colour is a bit dowdy (‘slate’, I think) as Loop had no ‘silver’ which was what I went into the shop to buy, but in the end I suspect we might end up loving it and finding it really useful. I now want to make others in this pattern – one in a lighter colour and with Fair Isle bands round the sleeves and round the bottom of the jumper. I wish the pattern also came in bigger sizes as the style would be ideal for grandchild No 1. Must ask Loop if they can recommend something similar.

Still finding vision blurred as conjunctivitis recedes slowly, so I’ve been delighted to find knitting has been possible while embroidery stitches just slip and slide over the fabric. I even managed to complete a band of Fair Isle when my eye was at its worst – wool and knitting needles being big enough to see – and that was particularly pleasing.

It’s super! I think it’s Elizabeth Zimmermann who comments somewhere on how good babies, with their perfect skin, look in grey.

Oh good, and when I come to think of it grey does look great on young people – it certainly dies nothing for me!
And as greys go this is a lovely soft one.

Hello from New Zealand. My boys had any number of jumpers just like this when they were small as my mother was a very keen knitter. I’m sure I will have some patterns tucked away somewhere that would be a suitable size. I must have a look.

Wow Anne, I’d be really interested if you find any. But don’t feel compelled to turn your house upside down – I know it’s only too easy to remember you have something tucked away, yet, after days of intermittent searching it can be found nowhere.
