Whitework embroidered alphabet: letter B

A whitework alphabet: letter B (hand embroidered by Mary Addison)

The rain has robbed us of the best of the apple blossom, though happily the wisteria flowers, not so long in bloom, are hanging on determinedly. The last few days’ weather has been typical of April in England – showers, a bit of wind, the sun peeking in and out and quite cold – you’d never guess we’d had the highest temperatures ever recorded for Easter just last weekend. Still it makes you grateful we made our forays into the countryside last week.

Letter B of unknown origin

I embroidered this B from a sketch made some time ago and when recently I came upon the image I’d sketched I was surprised to discover that what I’ve shown as a flower bud was in reality a bee – pity, I’d have liked to have had a bee on my B. Sadly, I haven’t managed to trace the origin of the image.

Sketches of various Bs found online

There’s many a slip ‘twixt sketch and stitch?

It’s lovely, even if not quite as you originally intended!

I always enjoy a look at your embroidery! I think I recall that you said once that you have several “colors” of white that you use, something that would never have occurred to me (although we agonize over which white paint to use in houses, of course).

Nice to hear from you again Ceci.
Yes, there are several white stranded cotton embroidery threads available.
Anchor has 2 whites: No 1 & No 2 (though This week I’ve found it hard to find a stockist for No 2)
DMC has 3: No B5200, No 3865 & Blanc (I’ve also just seen 3 more on their colour chart Nos 01, 02 and 27 but I’ve never actually seen these in shops nor noticed them listed to buy online – when I find a stockist I’ll probably buy a few skeins.)
At the moment for the alphabet I’m using Anchor 1 which has a very slight goldeny gleam to it which I like. I also use DMC blanc a lot.
